Fifty years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and 6.5 years after the inauguration of the nation’s first African-American President, through the use of six rich stories of American race relations, we will reflect on the history of race and religion in the United States. A history in which the UCC and its predecessors have played critical roles. We will look at the contributions and complexities of liberal religion and the experience of Africans and African Americans in US history beginning with the Amistad incident and ending with the Obama campaign and presidency. Throughout the sessions we will be attentive to the role of nonviolence and violence, the critical contributions of people of faith, and how the experience of race both separates us as Americans and brings us together.
